BURTT, Lewis ‘Daddy’ (1860–1935), English, evangelist

13–14 Hoxton Market, N1. London Borough of Hackney

Lewis and his older brother John (see page 140) had themselves been educated at a Ragged School, having been found living on the streets. Their mission offered the hundreds of children still in that situation food, clothing and a warm place to sleep. The interior was destroyed by enemy action in 1941 and the building is now a Greek restaurant.

CALMAN, Mel (1931–94), English, cartoonist

64 Linthorpe Road, Stoke Newington, N16. London Borough of Hackney

Calman lived here from 1931 to 1957. His immortal angst-ridden ‘Little Man’ first appeared in the Sunday Telegraph in 1962 and travelled round the press, ending in The Times from 1979 until Calman’s death. The character’s anxieties reflected Calman’s own lifelong depressive tendencies.
